Former FBI Director James Comey Enters Not Guilty Plea to Charges of Misleading Lawmakers
Former FBI chief James the former director has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.
His attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would seek to have the case terminated for several factors including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was charged shortly after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to proceed against him.
Court Developments
In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they planned to present various petitions to terminate the legal matter before a trial, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to assume control of the proceedings.
The former director's case was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his investigation into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
Legal Setting
The former director came across in good spirits as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.
Following the reading to the judge read his legal protections and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he understood the accusations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.
Background Context
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
While in office, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just immediately preceding the national vote that he was examining Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
The federal government assert the former director lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the Senate by saying he had not permitted someone at the FBI to leak to news outlets data about the government examinations.
Legal representatives also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, obstruct and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.
Individual Responses
In a video the former director published to his Instagram after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and accused Donald Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"Our household have been aware for years that there are costs to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a trial."
The accusations against the former director emerged after the former president posted on social media demanding his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and others.
