Teenager Found Deceased After False Accusations of Stealing Ashes
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days after being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest learned how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, asserting her infant's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was untrue.
Police Investigation
An official inquiry from police later determined the alleged burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the alleged taken ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The inquest received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his parents said they never receive that message.
Official Conclusion
Lead coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"During 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was released whilst inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is not possible to discern his intent."
